7/23/2008 UPS, Attachment, and Tracking Number - Virus

Printable Version...

If you receive an email with the subject stating it is from UPS with a tracking number, and an attachemnt. Do not open the attachment.

I have personally received several of these virus email attachments. My NOD32 anti virus tags it as the Virus Win32/spy.agent.NHS trojan. Other Anti-Virus' may tag it with a different name.

The sneaky thing is that there is a known hoax circulating by email stating there is a UPS virus going around. The warning I am posting here, is not a hoax.

The body of the email says:
Unfortunately we were not able to deliver postal package you sent on July the 1st in time because the recipient’s address is not correct.

Please print out the invoice copy attached and collect the package at our office.

    Printable Version...

Barbara Kimberly brought this to our attention. Hallmark has a web page on how to spot a genuine E-Card. http://tinyurl.com/2v527z

    What you can do:

    • Report suspicious e-mail to your e-mail service provider so they can take action. File a complaint at http://www.ic3.gov/
    • Forward the suspicious e-mails to abuse@hallmark.com (Due to the large amount of e-mail we receive at that address we will not be able to reply to your e-mail, but we will investigate.)

    • Then you should delete the e-mail.

Read more about it on the Hallmark website above...

If you are getting spam with a "free" log in name and password, JUST DON'T DO IT. I is the newest form of the Storm Worm

    Read On

"The Storm Worm is back, say email and internet security companies, but this time it's far more sophisticated than its first incarnation in January.

UK-based internet security firm, Marshal, says it has identified the Storm Worm, or what it calls the Storm Trojan, in a new outbreak of malicious spam emails that use login account confirmation details as a hook to get gullible email users to visit an infected website.

According to the company's Threat Research and Content Engineering team, the spam emails appear to come from a legitimate organisation and provide recipients with temporary login confirmation details for a website. The spam uses text like "For security purposes, please login and change the temporary Login ID and Password". Messages include a link to an IP address which is in fact a website infected with the Storm Trojan..."

Don't touch that Microsoft Security Bulletin email

    By John Oates

    Published Thursday 28th June 2007 12:15 GMT

Do not be tempted into opening an email with the subject line: "Microsoft Security Bulletin MS07-0065" because it is no such thing.

The email is not from Microsoft and contains a link to a webpage containing a trojan (disguised malware). The emails contain real people's names and the company they work for and looks like a genuine Microsoft email.

The mail looks pretty convincing and includes Microsoft and Windows logos. It claims that a zero-day vulnerability has been found that would allow hackers to get into machines running Outlook. The mail claims 100,000 machines have already fallen foul of the vulnerability.

There's more from Sophos here. http://sophos.com/pressoffice/news/articles/2007/06/bogusmspatch.html

Graham Cluely, senior tech consultant for Sophos, said the attempted attack actually showed there was increased awareness of computer security because hackers are now using social engineering to take advantage of this improved understanding.

He said: "The irony is that as awareness of computer security issues has risen, and the need for patching against vulnerabilities, so social engineering tricks that pose as critical software fixes are likely to succeed in conning the public."®

NOTE: Microsoft will never send a security patch attached to an unsolicited email. Never ever install any attachemnt based on the content of an email.
